Earlier in the month Archimedes Design was asked to participate in the Montreal Burning Man decompression party TaBURNac! They commissioned us to make a special black-light version of one of our domes to be set up at the party. Inside the dome we offered black-light face and body painting throughout the evening.
I may be tooting my own horn, but I think it was a HUGE success. The dome was packed with 25-35 people all night, and it looked amazing. We used a combination of Day-glo net and fluorescent patterned spandex. To date Archimedes had not used any print materials in the construction of tents or shade panels. I claim it's because those fabrics are more than double the price of the solid colors, but in fact I think I'm most afraid of Pandora's box.
Spandex comes in just about every print imaginable. Gun casings, jungle leaves, roses, kittens, jelly beans, op art, you name it. I knew that once that box was open the choices would be overwhelming. I would have to hire someone whose entire job would be to walk customers through pattern choices.
So for the first time at TaBURNac we pushed style over form and function-- let's just say I can smell Pandora's scent. Someone liked that art piece so much that they bought it on the spot. Good news for all of my Montreal burner friends, as it will be appearing on Mount Royal for a DJ set on May 24th, it will be at OM Reunion festival in June, then a few more Canadian festivals before heading on to Burning Man in August. Look for it! it's hard to miss.
I wanted to say thanks to the Montreal burner community. In 2011 we started sharing our camp with a small group from Montreal. Since then they've sort of grown to be my family. Over the years it's been wonderful to meet even more people from the Montreal community. They're pretty speical. It was a spectacular (literally) event, flawlessly executed (looking at you Jodi, Asha, Camille, and Glenn). Thank you so much for asking us to be a part this year.
Finally, getting asked to fire perform on top of that? Sugar on top! I was convinced it was some sort of elaborate birthday gift, as it was that weekend too! Rasmus and I did the first iteration of a dragon-staff duet. And we're just getting started. We've got a lot more planned for the summer, including permitted performances in Dumbo with a few more friends in the cast...stay tuned.
